Betaine Anhydrous:  In structural terms, trimethylglycine is the amino acid glycine with three methyl groups attached to it. The molecule is referred to as a "betaine" molecule (which is a category of molecules), but since it is the first dietary betaine to be discovered (from beetroot) and is the most commonly used molecule known as a betaine, the terms "trimethylglycine" and "betaine" are interchangeable. ^+[5,6]

A major mechanism of betaine's action is its role as a methyl donor. Either betaine directly donates a methyl group to reduce homocysteine into L-methionine or it increases body levels of S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) or active folate molecules, both of which are capable of donating methyl groups in other parts of the body. ^+[7,8]
